HMI Receives NYS Environmental Excellence Award

Homogeneous Metals receives NYS Environmental Excellence – HMI was one of six winners of this prestigious award.  The project was selected for its’ significant reduction to hazardous waste generation and air emissions.  HMI presented the mop water evaporator project that has put HMI 90-99% below its allowable limits for nickel and chromium to the municipal sewer and for significant reduction to hazardous waste generation and air emissions. 

An Award ceremony took place at HMI in January 2006 where NYS DEC, NYS and Oneida County representatives and guests from Pratt & Whitney, East Hartford joined all employees for the award presentation and lunch.

HMI recognized with UTC Environmental Health & Safety Awards
HMI was recognized as a winner of the 2005 United Technologies Corporation EH&S Award in the category of Continuous Improvement – Environment, for an innovative approach to achieving zero emissions of chrome and nickel to the sewer system, and for an overall integration of EH&S goals into its management practices.  The award was presented by Steve Finger, Pratt & Whitney President to Grant Bauserman, HMI General Manager at an all employee presentation in Clayville.

A celebration at Twin Ponds Golf & County Club in New York Mills in early June was attended by retirees, significant past employees and Mr. Joseph Wentzell, HMI’s founder, who with his wife, traveled from Florida for the event.  A poster collage depicting 40 years of HMI success was presented to past executives and Mr. Wentzell by Grant Bauserman, General Manager.

VPPPA Best Practices Directory 2005

Homogeneous Metals had five “Best Practices” published in OSHA’s 2005 Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association (VPPPA) Best Practices Directory. This is information that is gathered from information contained in VPP evaluation reports. The directory is intended to assist facilities throughout the country as they improve their safety and health programs.

The five “Best Practices” listed for HMI were:
• Employee Involvement
• Incident Investigation
• Preventive Maintenance
• Wellness Programs
• Housekeeping

VPP Award Presentation

In 2004, HMI was recertified as a Voluntary Protection Plan (VPP) Star Site by OSHA.  This is the highest national recognition for health and safety given by OSHA.  In 2000, HMI became one of the first 500 employers in the country to be recognized as a Star site.  The four-day re-assessment included interviews with dozens of employees, a review of the companies policies and procedures, and a complete plant evaluation.

HMI kicked off the celebration of its 40th year in business with a “Chili Cookoff” on February 28th. The ‘cookoff’ was the first and “Casino Night” was the second of several events to be held throughout the year to celebrate the 40th as well as 25 years in Clayville, N.Y

2005 Customer Open House & Exposition
This event was held in June with the theme “ Back to Basics”.  Retired 4-star General William Begert (now VP of Military International Program and Business Development for Pratt & Whitney) was the keynote speaker.  The second presenter was Tim Connors from Blasch Precision Ceramics, an HMI supplier.
